Lobos to Hawai'i for Thompson Invitational

The University of New Mexico women's golf team is off to Hawai'i for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. Hosted by the University of Hawai'i at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course, the 17-team field will play 36 holes on Tuesday starting at 12 noon MDT with the final round Wednesday, also beginning at noon. THE FIELD - New Mexico, Arizona, Central Connecticut State, Gonzaga, Hawai'i, Hawai'i-Hilo, Hawai'i Pacific, Idaho, Illinois State, Lipscomb, Louisville, Mississippi, Ohio State, San Francisco, Seattle, UTEP and Washington State.

UNM PARTICIPANTS - All six Lobos will be participate. Senior Beth Buchner, juniors Manon De Roey, Sofia Hoglund and Sammi Stevens and freshman Ira Knopf make up the five-person team while freshman Xenia Knopf will compete as an individual.

LAST TIME AT THE THOMPSON INVITE - It was 2006 and the 24th-ranked Lobos finished second. The Lobos trailed only No. 14 Tennessee in the 12-team field. UNM finished 54 holes at 42-over 894.

The Lobos were led freshman Mikaela Backstedt, who finished fifth at 5-over 218. Despite closing with a 77, sophomore Giselle Claux had the best finish of her Lobo career. She had a 9-over 222, good for eighth place.

Freshman Py Bengtsson tied for 12th at 12-over 225. Sophomore Alexandra Phelps was at 17-over 230, tying for 26th, while freshman Morgan Grantham tied for 43rd at 25-over 238.

TIME FOR THE BRANCH LAW FIRM CLINIC - UNM women's golf will host the annual Branch Law Firm Women's Golf Clinic Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the UNM Championship Golf Course.

The clinic is free and open to all levels of women's golfers. No registration is necessary; just show up at the course. Clubs will be provided for those who need them. In case of inclement weather, the clinic will be moved indoors.

The clinic will be taught by UNM head coach Jill Trujillo, who is a certified LPGA/PGA Professional, assistant coach Kari Zimmerly and the Lobo women's golf team.

BRUIN WAVE RECAP - The University of New Mexico finished in 12th place at the Bruin Wave Invitational in Tarzana, Calif. The Lobos, who were tied for fifth in the 15-team field after the first round, ended the 54-hole event at 977 (309-325-343), or 113 over par.

Top-ranked Southern California (884) edged tournament co-host UCLA by two strokes to win the team championship.

Junior Sammi Stevens paced UNM, tying for 16th in the 81-player field. Stevens finished at 228 (70-80-78).

Junior Manon De Roey entered the competition as the Mountain West's top golfer with a scoring average of 73.21, but had a tournament to forget. A day after shooting 88 - her worst round as a Lobo by five shots - De Roey was disqualified today after signing an incorrect scorecard.

Senior Beth Buchner and junior Sofia Hoglund tied for 54th at 29 over 245. Buchner's three rounds were 81-78-86, Hoglund 81-79-85. Freshman Ira Knopf tied for 78th at 269 (84-91-94).

USC's Annie Park (1 under 215) claimed the individual title.
