CSU women's golf finishes 14th at the MountainView Collegiate

March 16, 2013

Tucson, Ariz. - The Colorado State women’s golf team closed play at the MountainView Collegiate on Saturday afternoon. After a promising start to Friday’s opening round, the Rams struggled on the final day of play, finishing 14th.

Junior Emily Roering paced the Rams in Round 3, tallying a 72 (E) to finish the tournament tied for 23rd. Junior Christina Spinzig, who had an exceptional Round 2, struggled on Saturday and finished tied for 34th.

“It was frustrating,” Head Coach Susan Jennings said of her team’s play on Saturday. “It was mostly putting. The first two rounds we putted well but didn’t today and that was the difference.”

Roering finishes as the Rams’ top individual performer for the fifth time this season. The junior opened the tournament with a round of 72 but stumbled in the second round with a 77. She bounced back Saturday, shooting another round of 72. Jennings said that the usually consistent Roering had been battling an illness on the trip.

“She played pretty steady,” said Jennings. “She holed a 111-yard shot for an eagle on a par five to start the day and that kind of kick-started her.”

Betsy Kelly, who started as the No. 1 slot in the lineup, finished third on the team and tied for 59th in the tournament. Kelly improved in every round of the tournament, shooting a 79, 78, and 76, respectively. She has now put forth a sub-80 effort in 17 of her last 18 rounds.

Cecilie Krefting, who tied for 74th, and Sarah Roering, who finished 80th, also figured into the mix for the Rams.

Redshirt Mikayla Tatman and sophomore Jessa LaBarbera played as individuals in the tournament. Each showed signs of improvement throughout the three rounds. Tatman finished tied for 47th while LaBarbera finished tied for 54th.

“Our two individuals played good in the first two rounds especially,” said Jennings.

Their performance at the MountainView Collegiate will likely earn them some more opportunities in upcoming tournaments said Jennings.

“We need to figure out how to finish,” the first-year coach said. “We will get home, analyze what happened, and figure out if our lineup is going to change.”

The Rams return to the course April 8-10, when the team will compete in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz.
