COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming's Juanita Rico has been selected Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Month for March. The senior placed in the top 20 in each of the Cowgirls' four tournament appearances in March, including two top-five finishes.
Rico opened the month with an 11-over par effort to tie for 18th in the 116-golfer field at the NAU Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz., March 3-4. The senior carded a 36-hole total of 155 (76-79) on the par 72, 6,084-yard Oakcreek Country Club. As a team, Wyoming came in sixth place at 58-over 634.
Rico fired an even-par 72 on the final day of the Fresno State Lexus Classic (March 12-13) to secure a fourth-place individual finish among the field of 75. The native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, posted a five-over 221 (76-73-72) on the par 72, 6,074-yard Copper River Country Club in Fresno, Calif. Rico's effort helped the Cowgirls finish fifth in the final team standings at 50-over 914, marking Wyoming's third top-five team finish of the season, the program's most since 2008-09.
Rico collected her second top five individual finish of the month at the Bison Challenge at Paiute, March 15-17. Battling windy conditions that cancelled the tournament's third round, Rico recorded rounds of six-over 78 and four-over 76, tying for fifth among 105 players with a final card of 10-over 154 on the par 72, 6,022-yard Paiute Golf Resort in Las Vegas, Nev. Wyoming finished the two rounds in seventh place with a final score of 644.
Rico closed out the month tying for 13th individually at the Mountain View Collegiate (March 23-24). On the par 72, 6,277-yard Mountain View Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz., the senior shot two rounds under par en route to a 54-hole total of 2-over 218 (71-76-71), which ties for the fourth-lowest individual event score in Cowgirl history. As a team, Wyoming tied for the third-lowest event team score in program history, coming in 11th place at 36-over 900 (298-303-299).
In 21 rounds played this season, Rico has recorded five rounds at par or better. The senior ranks fifth in the Mountain West in stroke average at 75.14. This marks the first career MW Golfer of the Month award for Rico.
