Women's Golf Headed To Elite ASU Invite Friday
March 29, 2012
In what is likely its most challenging field thus far in 2011-12, the San Diego State women's golf team plays is final tournament before the conference championships, as it takes part in the PING/Arizona State Invitational, March 30-April 1. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be contested at the par-71, 6,099-yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
The No. 45 Aztecs are among a 17-school field that features eight squads ranked in the top 20, 10 in the top 30 and 16 in the top 50. Only fellow conference member UNLV, which is 56th nationally, is rated outside the top 50.
SDSU will be looking to bounce back from its 16th place performance at its lone home tournament, the Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn, which concluded March 20. The team is playing in the PING/ASU Invite for the second year in a row, taking 11th with a 44-over 908 in 2011.
The Aztecs will be paired with Stanford and New Mexico for the first round Friday, starting at the first hole at 8:40 a.m. MT. Play begins at 7:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, while all three rounds will feature live scoring on golfstat.com.
Same Starting Five Headed To Tempe
First-year head coach Leslie Spalding will bring her usual starting line-up to Tempe with senior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), juniors Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.), Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy) and Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) and freshman Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) slated to make the trip.
Four of SDSU's five starters participated in the 2011 PING/ASU Invite with the lone exception being true freshman Alston. Wong, meanwhile, was the Aztecs' top finisher at the same tournament a year ago, taking sixth overall. She currently leads the Mountain West by a wide margin in season stroke average with a 73.78 mark and is ranked 52nd nationally by golfstat.com.
