April 16, 2012
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State women's golfer Brianna Espinoza has been selected Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Month for April and Golfweek Player of the Week.
Espinoza paced the field of 127 golfers from start to finish at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic from April 9-11 in Chandler, Ariz. The Phoenix, Ariz., native secured medalist honors after carding a tournament-record 208 (68-68-72) on the par 72, 6,184-yard course at Ocotillo Golf Resort. Espinoza's 54-hole total of 208 eclipsed the previous course record of 213, set in 2011 by Portland State's Britney Yada. It also marked the lowest three-round total of her career.
Espinoza opened the tournament with consecutive rounds of 68, which tie for her best single-round total of the season. The senior recorded 16 birdies in the tournament, including seven in the opening round, five in the second round, and four to close out the event.
As a team, Colorado State posted a combined 26-over 809 (292-292-306) to place second among the field of 24 squads. The runner-up finish is the best by the Rams this season after posting top-10 finishes in six of 10 events.
In 30 rounds played this season, Espinoza has recorded nine rounds at par or better, including seven rounds under par. Entering this week's Conference championship, the senior ranks second in the Mountain West in stroke average at 74.67. This marks the first career MW Golfer of the Month and Golfweek Player of the Week award for Espinoza.
