Nuutinen And TCU In Lead At MW Championship
April 21, 2012
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- TCU's Sanna Nuutinen carded a 70 to take the individual lead, while the defending champion Horned Frogs have a five-stroke advantage after Saturday's second round of the Mountain West Women's Golf Championship in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Nuutinen, who began the day in fourth place, birdied three of her first four holes on the back nine as part of four birdies on the day. Her 1-under-par 143 through 36 holes has her three strokes ahead of San Diego State's Christine Wong.
A sophomore from Helsinki, Finland, Nuutinen is seeking her first collegiate tournament victory. She was last year's MW Freshman of the Year.
Nuutinen is also looking to become the first Horned Frog to win a league title since D'Rae Ward was the medalist at the 2003 Conference USA Championships.
TCU, in its final year in the MW before moving to the Big 12, is in pursuit of its third league championship in the last six years. The Horned Frogs are also seeking their fifth conference championship in the 18-year tenure of head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin.
The Horned Frogs entered Saturday's second round with a three-stroke lead but fell behind by six shots before surging back to the top. TCU's 299 Saturday gave it a total of 603. No. 45 San Diego State is at 608.
TCU freshman April McCoy shot a second-round even-par 72 and is tied for ninth individually. McCoy birdied her final three holes and four of the last six en route to a team-best five birdies on the day. She has a tournament-best seven birdies through the opening two rounds.
Brooke Beeler contributed a 76, including three birdies, for TCU and is tied for 12th.
