Stevens Qualifies for NCAA Championships
April 29, 2013
The University of New Mexico women's golf program will be represented at the NCAA Championships in 2013. Junior Sammi Stevens has been selected to compete at the NCAA West Regional May 9-11 at Stanford, Calif.
A 24-team field and six individuals will participate next week at the Stanford Golf Course. The top eight teams and two individuals not part of the qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships May 21-24 in Athens, Ga.
A two-time first team all-conference selection, Stevens leads UNM and ranks second in the Mountain West with a scoring average of 74.86. She has posted three top-12 finishes in the past four tournaments.
Stevens and the Lobos played at the Stanford Golf Course in February. She tied for 10th in a 73-player field at the Peg Barnard Invitational, posting a 36-hole score of 4-over 146 (70-76).
Somewhat surprising is that UNM junior Manon De Roey was not chosen to the NCAA field. De Roey won the Mountain West Conference individual championship over the weekend and is ranked fourth in the league with a scoring average of 75.50. MW member San Diego State had three individuals qualify, and all of them have higher scoring averages than De Roey.
As a team, UNM did not qualify for NCAA regionals for the first time in program history. The Lobos had advanced every year since regional play began in 1993.
