April 29, 2013

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Emma Henrikson, Paige Spiranac and Christine Wong have been chosen to participate in the NCAA Central Regional Championships, as announced Monday by the NCAA women's golf committee. With their selections, the Aztecs will be represented in postseason play for the fourth consecutive year.

Under the guidance of second-year head coach Leslie Spalding, the Aztec trio will compete with three other individuals and 24 teams at the University of Oklahoma's Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, Okla., May 9-11. The top eight schools and two individuals not part of the qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 21-24, in Athens, Ga.

A native of Malmö, Sweden, Henrikson led SDSU during her rookie campaign with a 75.76 stroke average, posting seven top-25 finishes, including two top-10s en route to being named Mountain West Freshman of the Year. At the Gold Rush Tournament in Yorba Linda, Calif., earlier this spring, Henrikson notched her highest finish of the season with a third-place performance, earning MW Women's Golfer of the Week honors.

In addition, Spiranac garnered first-team all-MW accolades along with Henrikson, logging four top-25 finishes, including two in the top six. The SDSU sophomore and Scottsdale, Ariz., product joined the squad in mid-January and recorded the Aztecs' third-best stroke average of 76.82, which ranks 16th in the conference so far this year. At the inaugural Cal Classic in Pleasanton, Calif., in February, Spiranac registered her highest finish of the season with a fifth-place showing before taking sixth at the MW Championships last weekend.

Not to be outdone, Wong will be making her fourth straight NCAA regional appearance after turning in a third-place effort at the MW tournament in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The SDSU senior and Richmond, B.C., Canada, native is second on the team and ranks 12th in the conference with a 76.41 stroke average, having amassed five top-20 finishes and three top-10s this season. The 2011-12 MW Women's Golfer of the Year, Wong was all-conference choice for the fourth consecutive season, landing on the second team during her final campaign as an Aztec.

After capturing the team title at the MW Championships, UNLV secured the league's automatic bid to the postseason and will play in the West Regional at Stanford, Calif., along with the MW's remaining individual qualifier in Sammi Stevens of New Mexico.
