2011-12 Season Review
June 1, 2012
The University of New Mexico women's golf team concluded its 2011-12 season May 12 by finishing in 18th place at the NCAA West Regional in Erie, Colo. The Lobos shot a 303 to end at 49-over 913 (303-307-303) at the Colorado National Golf Course (par 72, 6,575 yards).
The Lobos had to finish in the top eight of the 24-team field to advance to the NCAA Championships in Franklin, Tenn. UNM made its 20th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance.
Top-ranked UCLA and No. 7 LSU shared the team title at 873. The other six qualifiers advancing to the finals are Pepperdine, Colorado, Baylor, Stanford, North Carolina and Oklahoma.
"I really appreciate the effort given by our team not only for this tournament, but all season," said head coach Jill Trujillo. "I especially want to single out senior Rebecca Hellbom, who closed out a great four years as a Lobo." Sophomore Sammi Stevens was the top Lobo at the regional, finishing in a tie for 45th at 9-over 225 (72-77-76). Starting on the No. 10 tee, Stevens was even for the first nine holes. However, three consecutive bogeys after the turn led to a 76.
Sophomore Manon De Roey finished strong with a 72. She had three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars to tie for 49th at 10-over 226 (76-78-72). De Roey finished the season with a team-best 76.19 scoring average, .04 better than Stevens (76.23).
Playing her final collegiate round, senior Rebecca Hellbom posted a 75 for her low score of the tournament. She tied for 92nd at 232 (81-76-75). Hellbom ends her UNM career second all-time with 129 rounds played and No. 9 with a stroke average of 76.13.
Sophomore Sofia Hoglund finished at 236 (79-76-81), tying for 104th.
Junior Beth Buchner finished 109th at 237 (76-81-80). The gutty Buchner endured 54 holes despite a bad back that limited her to just five spring rounds before the regional. Rehabilitation on that back will keep her off the golf course most of the summer.
