June 18, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV women’s golfer Dana Finkelstein sits second at the Women’s Western Golf Association’s 113th National Amateur Championship, which is being played at the Dayton Country Club (par-71, 5,948 yards) in Dayton, Ohio. Finkelstein is 3-under-par (70-69) after the first two rounds and heads into match play, which begins on Wednesday.

“It is exciting to see Dana play well in a national event,” head coach Amy Bush said. “She continues to work hard in the offseason, which will only help her next year.”

Finkelstein is one-shot behind the leader, Brooke Mackenzie Henderson of Smith Falls, Ontario, Canada, who shot a 4-under (68-70) in the first two rounds.

“I played really well both days,” Finkelstein said. “I hit the ball well and played smart in the first two rounds and it all came together today to give me a good score.”

The Mountain West Golfer of the Year will now head to match play beginning on Wednesday and going through Thursday when the Championship Flight will be set. She will match up against Briana Midkiff, who just completed her freshman year at Iowa. The two will tee-off at 9 a.m. PST.

“Match play is definitely a different format,” Finkelstein said. “Your strategy changes a little bit since you’re playing against one person. So I’ll base my play off of what the other girl does and continue to hit smart shots.”

Players from across the United States and several countries are competing for the coveted W.A. Alexander Cup. The tournament opened with a 36--holes of stroke--play to seed the individuals for match play. The low 64 players will constitute the Championship Flight with the final round being 36 holes which will take place on Saturday, June 22; all others players will qualify into flights of 16 players with the final round being 18 holes.

Finkelstein completed her sophomore year with the best scoring average in the Mountain West. She competed in 32 rounds for the Rebels with an average of 74.28 per round.
