July 7, 2012

Kari Zimmerly has been named assistant women's golf coach at the University of New Mexico head coach Jill Trujillo announced.

Zimmerly, the former Kari Hunter, was a four-year letterwinner for the Lobos golf team from 1990-93, earning all-conference honors as a sophomore in 1991. She played 54 collegiate rounds at UNM. The Lobos won the Western Athletic Conference team title in 1993.

Zimmerly received her bachelor's degree from UNM in Communications and Journalism in 1993.

"I'm so excited to come back to the Lobo family," said Zimmerly, a native of Sherman, Texas. "I look forward to bringing positive energy and pride to the UNM women's golf program."

Zimmerly comes to UNM after nine years at Hope Christian School in Albuquerque where she taught 3- and 4-year-olds and served as the assistant director of the pre-school. Zimmerly was named Hope Christian's Teacher of the Year in 2009.

"Kari is a fantastic addition to Lobo women's golf," said head coach Jill Trujillo. "She has extensive golf knowledge, and her experience of being around the game will greatly enhance our program."

Zimmerly has taught golf as part of UNM Continuing Education and also given private lessons. She spent four years at Four Hills Country Club in Albuquerque, serving as the pro shop manager and running junior camps. Zimmerly was also banquet manager and in charge of tournament operations at Paradise Hills Golf Club in Albuquerque.

While attending UNM, Zimmerly worked summers at the Hank Haney Golf Ranch at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney, Texas.

Zimmerly and her husband, Wright, have two daughters, Kaitlin and Kourtney. Wright is currently the head professional at Ladera Golf Course in Albuquerque and a volunteer assistant for the UNM men's golf team.

Wright's father, Sam, was a member of the UNM men's golf team (1961-65) that won three conference championships. He was on the staff that opened the UNM Championship Golf Course (then UNM South) in 1966, and is currently the director of golf at Ladera.
