Lobos Close Fall Season at Longhorn Invitational

The University of New Mexico women's golf team travels to Austin, Texas, for the 39th Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 72, 6,344 yards). Competitors will play 18 holes Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.

The elite 15-team field features New Mexico, host (34) Texas and (9) Alabama, (10) Arizona State, (22) Arkansas, (27) Auburn, (31) Denver, (6) Florida, Illinois, Kent State, (26) Pepperdine, TCU, Tulsa, (40) UNLV and (38) UCLA. That's 10 teams in the top-40 of the Oct. 21 Golfweek poll.

Head coach Jill Trujillo's lineup consists of senior Beth Buchner and juniors Manon De Roey, Sofia Hoglund and Sammi Stevens.

UNM LAST YEAR AT THE BETSY RAWLS - The University of New Mexico moved up three spots to finish in eighth place at the 38th Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. UNM shot a 16-over 304 for a final total of 906 (299-303-304) at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 72, 6,344 yards).

Host and 20th-ranked Texas (880) claimed the team title by a 12 shots over Florida, Pepperdine and Tulsa (892).

Playing in warm and gusty conditions, the Lobos flirted with a top-five finish before falling back. New Mexico's five golfers were a combined 12 over par on their last five holes.

Senior Rebecca Hellbom led the Lobos by finishing in 19th place at 9-over 225 (70-76-79). It could have been a lot better. Hellbom was just 1 over after the first 13 holes, but she dropped six strokes over the final five holes to finish with a 79. She started the final round in a tie for 11th.

Texas' Nicole Vandermade shot a 69 to win the individual title at 2-under 214.

Sophomore Sofia Hoglund finished at 226 (74-75-77), tying for 22nd. Playing as an individual, sophomore Manon De Roey had a solid showing by placing in a tie for 27th at 227 (74-75-78). Sophomore Sammi Stevens tied for 44th at 231 (78-76-77), but bogeyed three of her last six holes.

After struggling in her first two rounds, junior Beth Buchner shot 1-under 71 to tie for the third-best round of the day. Buchner tied for 48th at 232 (81-80-71) after starting the day in a tie for 72nd. Senior Sarah Salvo also tied for 48th at 232 (77-76-79).

BERNING CLASSIC REVIEW - The bad news for the University of New Mexico Lobos' women's golf team is they lost the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic by 63 strokes. The good news is the Lobos improved their team score each day - from 310 to 308 to 304. The Lobos' 922 total left them 63 shots behind host Oklahoma.

The Lobos got into an early hole with a disastrous first-round that left them tied for last place in the 18-team field. UNM made a nice jump Tuesday in the second round moving up five spots into a tie for 12th place.

The Lobos saved their best round for last aided by junior Manon De Roey's 73. She also improved every day with cards of 7-over, 5-over and 1-over on Wednesday to finish tied for 43nd place at 229.

Junior Sammi Stevens shot a 78 on the final 18 holes, her worst round of the 54-hole tourney, but she ended up as UNM's top golfer with a 228, good for a tie in the 40th spot. Junior Sofia Hoglund shot a 76 on Wednesday to finish tied for 42nd. Senior Beth Buchner went 80-78-77 for a 235 total and fell into the 71st spot. Freshman Xenia Knopf went 89-92-95=276.
