FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State soccer team was topped 2-0 by No. 1 Stanford Friday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.

"This was an important experience for our young team," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "Stanford is clearly a top program with a killer instinct to win. We learned that we, too, can cause problems and apply our game and have success."

The Cardinal got on the scoreboard in the 11th minute with a goal from sophomore Alex Doll and went into the locker room at halftime with a 1-0 lead. Fellow Stanford sophomore Haley Rosen put the ball in the back of the net in the 77th minute to put the Cardinal up for a final score of 2-0.

"Clinical finishing was the main difference between the teams today," said Zwaschka, "and that is obviously vital. We will continue the learning process and feel we have a lot of positives to build from our first exhibition.""

The Bulldogs were led by goalkeeper Katie DeVault who recorded five saves in just the first half and midfielder Megan Mossman who put two shots on goal. Freshman Alyssa Wilson, who split the time in goal with DeVault, had four saves in her first appearance as a 'Dog.

The 'Dogs will hit the pitch for their first regular season matchup when they travel to UC Davis on August 17 at 5 pm. Fresno State will open the season at home against No. 6 UCLA on August 24 at 7 pm.
