Rebels Shut Down By Jayhawks

LAWRENCE, Kan. (UNLVRebels.com) - After a close first half, Kansas scored two second-half goals to hand UNLV a 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Kansas Invitational in women's college soccer action at the KU Soccer Complex. The Rebels dropped to 1-2-1 on the year with the setback, while the Jayhawks improved to 3-1.
The game was scoreless for the first 30 minutes, until Tournament MVP Whitney Berry posted the first goal of the day, a bending shot from 18 yards out in the 33rd minute, off an assist by Jamie Fletcher. That was the only score of the first half, while Kansas finished with a slight 8-5 edge on shots.
The second half saw the Jayhawks with a 15-4 advantage on shots, and that attack resulted in two more goals. Berry assisted on both scores, the first a goal by Fletcher in the 57th minute. Kansas sealed the game in the 84th minute when a through pass by Berry led to a breakaway attempt for Courtney Dickerson, who scored for a 3-0 advantage for the Jayhawks.
UNLV finished with nine shots on the day, with four from Courtney Botelho, while Macy Jo Harrison and Jenn Wolfe both attempted two each. Kylie Wassell finished with six saves for the Rebels, and Kat Liebetrau collected four saves for the shutout for Kansas. Following the conclusion of the game, Wolfe and Harrison were named to the All-Tournament team for UNLV.
UNLV will return to action on Friday, Aug. 31, when it hosts Oklahoma in the second game of the UNLV Rebel Classic at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Northern Arizona and Florida Atlantic will play in the day's other game at 4:30 pm. UNLV closes out the weekend by facing Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 pm.
