UC Davis Defeats Nevada in Overtime 2-1
Aug. 26, 2012
DAVIS, Calif. -
The University of Nevada soccer team fell to the UC Davis Aggies in overtime 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (1-2-1, 0-0 MW) on the season, while UC Davis improves to (2-0-1, 0-0 Big West).
“We had many opportunities in regulation to win the game but came up short,” head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. “We will bounce back and improve on seizing those opportunities going forward.”
UC Davis got out to a 1-0 lead, as Aggies forward Kiele Argente turned an errant pass from Nevada keeper Dana Moreno into a goal in the 22nd minute. Sophomore Chrisalyn Fonte responded with her third goal of the season, heading in a cross from Madison Lorenzen to tie the game at 1-1. Lorenzen has dished out an assist on three of Nevada’s four goals this season.
The Wolf Pack and Aggies remained neck and neck for the majority of the second half. Nevada nearly missed out on an opportunity to take the advantage in the 80th minute, as Sarah Schmeda’s 15-yard blast bounced off the top post. The teams ended regulation tied 1-1.
The match seemed poised to head into a second overtime period, with both teams coming up short on attempts to pull ahead. UC Davis came up big in the final minute of the overtime period, claiming the win on a 45-yard set piece goal by Ana Marija Solo that soared just past the reach of Moreno.
Nevada will remain on the road, traveling to Texas for a match Friday against Texas Tech and TCU on Sunday.
