Another Day, Another Draw
Oct. 21, 2012
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - For the second straight game the UNLV women's soccer team played to a double-overtime tie on the road, with the most recent result a 1-1 draw at Boise State in Mountain West women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon from Boas Soccer Complex Stadium. UNLV now stands to 10-3-4 on the season and 2-1-3 in the MW, while the Broncos are 8-8-2, 3-2-1 in the conference.
"From start to finish, it was us pushing the attack, and as the game went on it was considerably one-way traffic," said UNLV head coach Michael Coll. "Soccer can be a cruel game sometimes and only a combination of the crossbar multiple times and inspired goalkeeping five to six times from the Boise keeper kept the game tied."
UNLV grabbed an early lead when freshman forward Susie Bernal posted her second goal of the season in the ninth minute, on a shot from 12 yards out that deflected off a defender into the goal. Senior midfielder Macy Jo Harrison assisted on the score, giving her eight on the season, a new school record.
The Rebels kept the lead at halftime, but the Broncos would take advantage of a free kick just outside the box. Katy Oehring took the kick for BSU, and arched a high shot that just barely cleared Rebel goalkeeper Kylie Wassell's reach at the top of the goal for the score in the 50th minute. That would tie the game at 1-1, and despite UNLV pushing the ball into the Bronco side of the field for the majority of the final 60 minutes, the game would result in a draw, UNLV's second of the weekend.
UNLV finished the afternoon with a 22-14 edge on shots, which included 8-6 in the second half and 8-2 over the two overtime periods. Boise would take five corner kicks to three for the Rebels. Wassell finished with three saves on the day, while Maddy McDevitt posted five in the net for BSU.
UNLV will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27 with a 6 pm contest at Fresno State. The Rebels have clinched a spot in the 2012 MW Tournament, and can earn anywhere between the third-sixth seed, depending on next weekend's results.
