New Mexico Lobos Women's Soccer - At San Diego State
Friday: San Diego State 1, New Mexico 0
SAN DIEGO - The University of New Mexico Lobos women's soccer team almost played the No. 6 ranked San Diego State Aztecs even Friday night on the Aztecs home pitch - almost.
The Aztecs outshot the Lobos 12-7 and had one extra shot on goal - 4-to-3. It was that extra shot that made the difference as an 18-yard shot by Kelsey Booth slipped past UNM keeper Kelli Cornell to hand the Aztecs a 1-0 Mountain West victory.
The win kept the Aztecs undefeated in Mountain play at 7-0 and dropped UNM to 4-2-1. San Diego State still has only one pitch loss this season and stands at 17-1-1. UNM is 10-6-2 overall.
The Lobos and the Aztecs have a good shot at a rematch next week in the Mountain West Tournament to be played in San Diego. The Aztecs snatched the regular-season crown out of UNM's hands and will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed.
The Lobos will be the No. 2 seed and looking to defend their tournament crown from 2011. The tourney champion earns the Mountain's automatic bid.
The Aztecs are the only conference team that is a lock to enter the NCAA College Cup with an at-large bid. The Aztecs also are No. 6 in the RPI rankings and are considered a dark horse in postseason play.
The loss to SDSU snapped a two-game win streak for the Lobos and ends their regular season. The Aztecs have now won ten straight games, a streak in which they scored at least three goals in seven of those matches.
The Aztecs did not find the UNM defense to be easy. SDSU's Megan Jurado came into the match as the Aztecs' leading scorer, but it was Brooks who found the only crack in the UNM defense.
Lobo senior Rachel Montoya led the Lobos with three shots and had two on goal. Booth had two shots, two on goal and one that found the back of the Lobos' net. Cornell had three saves for UNM.
Booth's goal came at the 47:54 mark, early in the second period.
