Nov. 4, 2012

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Top-seeded and sixth-ranked San Diego State captured the 2012 Mountain West Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon, defeating second-seeded New Mexico, 2-0, at SDSU Sports Deck. With the win, the Aztecs earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

SDSU scored what would be the game-winner in the 23rd minute. The Aztecs took a corner kick and Haley Locker put one on net. The rebound went to Carli Johnson, who touched it to Kelsey Booth and the sophomore headed the ball into the net from three yards out.

San Diego State maintained its one-goal lead until the 73rd minute when Megan Jurado fired off a shot from the left side of the pitch. The rebound bounced to Sarah Halverson, who put her shot past New Mexico goalkeeper Kelli Cornell.

The Aztecs kept the Lobos at bay the rest of the way as SDSU went on to win its second MW tournament crown and first since 2009.

San Diego State outshot New Mexico, 16-6, and held an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. The Aztecs also earned more corner kicks (4-1) than the Lobos.

At the end of the Championship, SDSU's Carli Johnson was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Johnson, along with teammates Rachel Boaz, Kelsey Booth and Megan Jurado were named to the all-tourney team. Joining the Aztec quartet on the all-tournament squad was New Mexico's Cornell, Lauren Irwin and Rachel Montoya, Nevada's Dana Moreno and Chelsea Fricke, and UNLV's Caitlin Allen and Jenn Wolfe.
