2012 Women's Soccer schedule

Four games against teams that played in last season's NCAA Tournament highlight the UNLV women’s soccer team's 2012 schedule, which was released by the athletics department on Friday.

The Rebels will be playing 10 of 18 games at home in 2012, after only eight home games in the 2011 season, while one of the road tournaments will be at Kansas, a 2011 NCAA participant.

"I’m excited with the 2012 schedule as we aim to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish in the Mountain West," said first-year UNLV head coach Michael Coll. "The non-conference slate will prepare us well for league play, especially the back-to-back games against Big 12 powers Kansas on the road and at home to Oklahoma. With a veteran team returning, we should be well equipped to compete at a high level in each of these 18 games."

For the fourth straight year UNLV will have the earliest start date in program history, as the Rebels begin the 2012 campaign at home against Northern Arizona on Aug. 17. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since the 2004 season. That will be followed by an Aug. 19 contest against Hawaii, also at home.

Following that will be four straight weekends of regular-season tournaments. First up will be the Kansas Invitational, where UNLV will face South Dakota on Aug. 24 before taking on the host Jayhawks on Aug. 26.

Then it's back home to Las Vegas for the UNLV Rebel Classic on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. Oklahoma and Florida Atlantic will be UNLV's opponents on that weekend, while NAU will also participate in the weekend. The Rebels will stay at home again for the UNLV Nike Invitational on Sept. 7 and 9, with Sacramento State as the first opponent, and Montana, the second 2011 NCAA tournament opponent, will be the opposition on the second day of the tournament. Indiana State rounds out the four-team field. Both dates are also part of a UNLV soccer tripleheader with the men's team.

The non-conference slate will close out with three more games. The High Altitude Tournament, hosted by NAU in Flagstaff, Ariz., will see UNLV take on future Mountain West member San Jose State on Sept 14, and then meet Florida Gulf Coast, another NCAA participant from 2011, on Sept. 16. The third contest will be at home on Sept. 23 against Idaho.

Mountain West play will start for the Rebels on Sept. 29, against Wyoming in Las Vegas. One advantage for the Rebels this year is that the top three teams from the 2011 standings will all have to visit Peter Johann Memorial Field. In addition to Wyoming, second-place finisher San Diego State comes to UNLV on Oct. 12, followed by regular-season and tournament champion New Mexico on Oct. 14. UNLV closes out the regular season with three straight road dates, with games at new conference rivals Nevada, Reno (Oct. 19) and Fresno State (Oct. 27) sandwiched around an Oct. 21 contest at Boise State.

This year’s Mountain West Tournament will be hosted by San Diego State on Oct. 31-Nov. 4.

The Rebels return seven starters from last year’s squad, which finished with an 8-10-3 record and advanced to the MW tournament semifinals for the second straight year. They will be led by Coll, who took over as head coach on April 19 after eight years on the coaching staff at perennial power Penn State.
