FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State soccer team opened camp Wednesday to kick off the 2012 season and first season in the Mountain West. Head coach Brian Zwaschka is looking forward to getting the team back together and to build the necessary team chemistry for the team to be successful.

"We are looking forward to getting the group back together and starting to have fun again," said Zwaschka. "This is a serious and dedicated group and we just want to enjoy this time together. There is a lot of learning and development and a lot of bonding that goes on in the preseason. It's a really fun time even though it is very difficult and we make it challenging. "

The team will participate in three-a-days from now until the first official match against UC Davis on Aug 17. Prior to the game against UC Davis, Fresno State will travel to face defending national champion Stanford in an exhibition match.

The Bulldogs are coming off a successful 2011 campaign in which they advanced to the conference championship game and recorded the most wins in a season under Zwaschka. The team was also extremely tough at home where they recorded a record of 5-0 and extended the home unbeaten streak from 2010 to 10 games. The first test at home will come against UCLA on Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. PT inside Bulldog Stadium.

"We love the idea of taking on new opponents and better ranked opponents as well," said Zwaschka. "The Mountain West we know is going to be very difficult. I think top to bottom it's going to be a very competitive conference. In looking at results historically, it looks like any team can beat anybody on any given day and there are no distinct frontrunners and that sets up for a challenge all its own."

As the 'Dogs enter the Mountain West, they return the players who led the team in points, goals, saves, and shutouts in Callie Hancock and Katie DeVault.

Fresno State will welcome 12 new faces to the program, including junior transfer Rachel Armstrong and freshman Ashley Borel, Rianna Cota, and local product Mariah Carrier.

The Bulldogs will have a Red & White scrimmage open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 6 p.m. on the Soccer/Lacrosse Field as a part of the preseason camp.
