Rebels Slated Fourth In MW Preseason Poll

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV was picked to finish fourth in the 2012 Mountain West women's soccer preseason poll, which was announced by the conference on Thursday and voted on by the league's eight head coaches.

Two-time defending champion New Mexico is the favorite to win the 2012 regular-season title. The Lobos collected five first-place votes and 46 total points, while San Diego State was a close second with 44 points and two first-place votes. MW newcomer Fresno State received the remaining first-place vote and was picked third, totaling 35 points.

UNLV received 31 points for fourth in the poll, followed by Wyoming (28 points) in fifth. Boise State (18 points), Air Force (12 points) and MW newcomer Nevada, Reno (10 points) rounded out the preseason rankings in sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively.

The Rebels, under new head coach Michael Coll, return two all-conference performers from a year ago in senior midfielder Macy Jo Harrison and senior defender Caitlin Allen. The pair were both second team All-MW in 2011 and are two of the five seniors on this year's team. A total of Eight student-athletes on this year's squad are from the Las Vegas/Henderson area.

UNLV will host Cal State Fullerton in an exhibition on Sunday, Aug. 12, at 6 p.m. at Peter Johann Memorial Field before opening the regular season on Friday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. against Northern Arizona, also at Johann Field. The Rebels will conclude their season-opening weekend vs. Hawaii on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m., before playing at the Kansas Invitational, Aug. 24-26.
