FRESNO, Calif. ---The season has finally arrived for the Fresno State soccer team as they hit the road this weekend. The Bulldogs will travel Friday to face UC Davis at 5 p.m. in the season opener, followed by a trip to San Francisco where the 'Dogs will take on the Dons at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

"With this weekend, you never know what to expect from teams right at the beginning of the season, so it's about making sure that we are prepared with the things that we know are going to make us successful," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "I feel pretty good about our chances going in. We are always going to compete in every game we play and we are going to try to win both games."

The first test of the regular season will come on Friday against UC Davis. Head coach Maryclaire Robinson leads the Aggies in her 21st season after posting an 11-7-1 record in 2011. In the Big West preseason polls, the Aggies are picked to finish seventh and junior Mary Beth Mazurek was voted to the preseason All-Big West team. The last time the 'Dogs and Aggies faced was in 2007, during which UC Davis secured the victory 1-0 in OT at home.

"The first road trip is always an experiment with the two-game weekend," said Zwaschka. "We tried to get our feet wet with a little bit of travel with going to Stanford so that was really good for us and we had a good performance there in addition to learning about the travel."

The 'Dogs will continue the road trip when they head to face San Francisco on Sunday. San Francisco enters a new era this season after naming Jim Millinder as the new head coach for the Dons in 2012. The team returns 16 letterwinners from the 2011 squad and the two leading point scorers in Christina Moberg and Mackenzie Krieser, who each had five goals in 2011. The teams last met a season ago with the 'Dogs coming out on top with a 3-0 victory at home.

The 'Dogs have been hard a work for the past two weeks in preseason camp and are looking forward to transferring the chemistry that they have developed in practice into great teamwork this season.

"Camp has been really good so far," junior Lauren Lindstrom said. "The team has come together really, really well. We are all super close and being close off the field makes us play better on the field because the chemistry just intertwines and makes us want to play for each other and want to work for each other."

The 'Dogs will open the season at home on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at Bulldogs Stadium. The game will serve as a Back to School and Greek Night with giveaways including autograph cards, Greek Life shirts, and FREE Fresno State Ice cream!

"The UCLA game is going to be huge for us," said Lindstrom. "The more support that we have at the game, the more we will get pumped up and the better we will play. We are definitely excited."
