Mountain West Announces Women's Soccer Players of the Week - September 17, 2012

Sept. 17, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nevada senior midfielder Sarah Schmeda and New Mexico junior defender Liz Nare have been selected Mountain West Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. This is the first Mountain West weekly award for both Schmeda and Nare.

Schmeda scored her first two goals of the season in Nevada's 3-2 overtime win against Weber State last week. The Littleton, Colo., native sparked the Wolf Pack offense in the second half, scoring her first goal in the 73rd minute to tie the game, 2-2. Schmeda scored her second goal of the evening, and the game-winner, on a breakaway within the first two minutes of the overtime period, keeping Nevada undefeated at Mackay Stadium this season. Schmeda recorded four shots, three on goal, with two finding the back of the net.

Hailing from Lake Forest, Calif., Nare anchored the New Mexico defense in a 1-0 double-overtime victory over in-state rival New Mexico State. The Lobo defense allowed just three shots and none from inside 25 yards of the goal. Nare drew an assist on the winning goal, as her long pass found Jordan Craig at the edge of the box, who settled the ball and passed to Elba Holguin for the winning shot.
