Weekend Home Stand For Soccer

FRESNO, Calif. ---The Red Wave can catch the Fresno State soccer team in Bulldog Stadium twice this weekend for the first time this season. The Bulldogs will take on CSU Bakersfield on Friday night under the lights at 7 p.m. and Cal Poly on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs are excited to be back at home after a tough road trip in the Big 12 against Texas and then-No. 7/9 Oklahoma State. Friday will only be the team's third time playing at home in ten games. The Red Wave's turnout in Bulldog Stadium against UCLA still leads the Mountain West as the largest crowd of the year with 1,780 fans.

At Friday night's game against CSU Bakersfield, the Bulldogs will be celebrating Youth Soccer Month and it will serve as Breast Cancer Awareness night and will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. All fans are encouraged to wear pink.

Sunday's game will serve as Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day and pass back equipment day. Fresno State Faculty and Staff members are encouraged to attend the game to be recognized. For pass back equipment, Fresno State will collect gently used soccer equipment from fans which will then be donated to charity. Fans that bring equipment will receive a prize.


About the Roadrunners (3-6-1)
CSU Bakersfield is coming off a close 1-0 win over UC Davis in Saint Mary's tournament. The Roadrunners are led by second-year head coach Melissa Phillips who posted a 3-14-1 record in her first year. Senior Sam Peña has led the Roadrunners in scoring the last two seasons and has two goals and three assists in ten games this season. In the net for the Roadrunners is redshirt freshman Tori Ornela who has allowed 11 goals and has 30 saves this season.

Against the Roadrunners
The Bulldogs have the advantage over the Road¬runners as Fresno State leads the series 5-1-2 all-time. The 'Dogs have won four out of the five meetings at home with the fifth coming in a tie. The last time the squads met the Bulldogs won the game 3-1 on the road in October of last year.

About the Mustangs (3-4-1)
The Mustangs are coming into Bulldog Stadium hungry for a win as they have dropped the last four games to tough opponents. Head coach Alex Crozier enters his 20th year leading the Mustangs as the four-time Big West coach of the year. On the field Cristina Farrington leads the Mustangs with three goals, while Alyssa Giannetti has allowed 16 goals on the season.

Against the Mustangs
Cal Poly has the upper hand all-time with a 4-8 lead over the Bulldogs. In the last meeting, the 'Dogs had a thrilling 3-2 OT victory in San Luis Obispo.

Best of the West
Sophomore Katie DeVault returned this year for the 'Dogs between the pipes. After five weeks of action, she leads the Mountain West in saves (54) and saves per game (6.43). DeVault recorded a monstrous 24 saves during week two when she set the school record for single game saves (12) in back-to-back games. Forward Callie Hancock also tops the conference leaderboard with 33 shots and 3.67 shots per game this season.

Shots Not Ending In Scores
The Bulldogs have recorded 123 shots on the season which places fifth in the Mountain West Conference. However, the 'Dogs have only scored six goals this season and have been shut out four times. The team`s main focus this weekend will be finishing and getting the ball in the back of the net.

Three To Go
The Bulldogs have three non-conference games remaining before enter the inaugural year in the Moun¬tain West Conference. The Bulldogs will open conference play at home against Air Force on Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.

Still Searching
After a tough opening schedule against stiff competition, the Bulldogs are still searching for the first win of the season. Fresno State has faced threeTop 25 opponents as a part of this difficult schedule as well as playing seven of the nine games on the road.
