Sept. 21, 2012
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Looking to close out the pre-Mountain West portion of the season in strong fashion, the Cowgirl soccer team travels to Logan, Utah for a matchup with Utah State Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.
The Aggies are 5-2-3 for the year and are coming off a 1-0 loss to No. 12 BYU Thursday night. Ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA West region, USU fought to a 1-1 double overtime draw with No. 23 Washington last weekend. Wyoming owns a 3-2-1 all-time record against Utah State.
"Playing a good team on the road will not be easy," said Wyoming coach Pete Cuadrado. "Utah State is very well-coached and they have a lot of weapons to watch out for, so this is a great team to battle against to help us prepare for our conference games."
A 2011 NCAA Tournament team, the Aggies are led by Jennifer Flynn, who has three goals on the year while teammates Mari Miyashiro and Jade Tarver have each contributed a pair. Kendra Pemberton is second in the Western Athletic Conference in shots with 44 this season (21 on goal), while Flynn has made 24 shot attempts. As a team, the Aggies are second in the WAC averaging 17.22 shots per match.
Utah State goalie Ashlyn Mulford is 13th in the nation in save percentage and 25th in the nation in goals-against average at .57. The Aggies recently had a 14-game home winning streak snapped by Northern Colorado, a team the Cowgirls beat by a 2-0 score two weeks ago.
Wyoming, outscoring opponents 26-19, is ranked first in the Mountain West in points (72), goals (26) and assists (20), while second in corner kicks with 45.
The Cowgirls own the 22nd-best scoring offense in the nation at 2.6 goals per game, and sophomore forward Sara Paul leads the national standings in assists with nine on the year. Liz O'Reilly is third in the MW with four assists through 10 games.
Following the matchup with Utah State, the Cowgirls open MW play with an away game at UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m.
