Allen Earns Weekly Honors

Oct. 15, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior Caitlin Allen was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Allen is the second Rebel this season to earn defensive honors from the MW, and it's the second such honor in her career.

Allen, a 5-7 defender from San Diego, Calif., was the key to the Rebels' defensive effort this past weekend, highlighted by a 2-0 shutout of New Mexico on UNLV's Senior Day, which also ended the Lobos' 17-game conference unbeaten streak. Allen and the rest of the UNLV defenders did not allow a shot the entire game from the top five scorers on the UNM squad, and to a total of five for the whole game. It was the only shutout of the weekend involving a team from the top half of the conference, and was also the fourth in the past five games posted by the Rebel defenders. In UNLV's other game of the weekend, she helped hold No. 7 San Diego State to nine total shots, more then six under its average, in a tight 2-1 loss, with one of the two goals coming off a PK.

UNLV, 10-3-2 overall and currently tied for second in the Mountain West at 2-1-1, will return to action on Friday with a 7 pm contest at in-state rival Nevada, Reno.
