Mountain West Announces Women's Soccer Players of the Week
Oct. 22, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior midfielder Rachel Montoya and San Diego State senior defender/midfielder Tiffany Hurst have been selected Mountain West Women's Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Nevada senior goalkeeper Dana Moreno garners the MW Defensive Player of the Week award. This is the second career Mountain West weekly award for Hurst, and first for both Montoya and Moreno.
Montoya had a hand in all three of New Mexico's goals as the Lobos swept a pair of Mountain West contests over the weekend. With the two victories, UNM secured the No. 2 seed in next week's MW Women's Soccer Championship. On Friday, the Albuquerque, N.M., native assisted on the lone goal of the game, crossing the ball to teammate Alexia Leyba at the 1:19 mark of a 1-0 shutout of Air Force. In Sunday's 2-1 win over Wyoming, Montoya tied the contest with a goal at the 69:51 mark, then assisted on the game-winning score with 1:08 left to play. She finished with weekend with four points and eight shots, including two on goal.
Hurst participated in three of San Diego State's six goals as the Aztecs clinched the 2012 Mountain West regular-season crown with wins over Wyoming and Air Force. With SDSU trailing, 1-0, in Friday's outing against Wyoming, the Santa Rosa, Calif., product brought the Aztecs even with a goal in the 30th minute en route to the 3-1 victory. She followed that performance with assists on a pair of scores by teammate Hannah Keane in Sunday's 3-0 shutout of Air Force. Hurst ended the weekend with four points and three shots, including one on goal.
Moreno recorded consecutive shutouts in Nevada's two home draws against UNLV and Fresno State last weekend. The back-to-back shutouts gives the Los Angeles, Calif., native four straight, which ties a program record that was set during the 2010 season. Moreno grabbed four saves in the Wolf Pack's 0-0 tie with UNLV on Friday, and snagged seven saves in the 0-0 tie with Fresno State on Sunday. She played all 220 minutes of the consecutive double-overtime contests.
