TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of New Mexico softball team dropped its season opener to Creighton Thursday afternoon, 5-1, in the opening day of the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.

The Lobos got six hits from six different players: Mariah Rimmer, Kaity Ingram, Chelsea Anaya, Jordan Sjostrand, Jordyn Bledsoe and Cassandra Kalapsa. Rimmer, Ingram and Anaya also showed some speed in recording a stolen base apiece.

Creighton used four hits and a UNM miscue in the first inning to put up four runs. The Lobos put up a run in the bottom of the third as Rimmer reached on a single, stole second and was driven in by a single to left center by Ingram.

The Jays tacked on their fifth run in the top of the fifth frame, stringing together a single and a double on two outs.

"We need to come out of the gates strong in our next games," head coach Erica Beach said. "We finished the game strong but definitely need to keep runs off the board early.

"There were some nerves to start the game, so hopefully the team will settle in and we can come out stronger next game."

Senior Kaela DeBreock took the loss, tossing all seven innings. She gave up eight hits and five earned runs while striking out five batters and walking one.

Winning pitcher was Becca Changstrom who also pitched all seven innings, striking out six batters and walking just one.

The Lobos play again at 7:00 p.m. MT against host ASU. Head coach Erica Beach will be honored prior to the start of the game. Follow tonight's game via Live Radio, or GameTracker.
