Gophers Dig Out A Late Win Over The Rebels
Feb. 10, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (2-3) closed out their Sportco Kick-Off Classic with a 4-0 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-3) on Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. Minnesota, who got a three-hit shutout from Sara Moulton (1-2), scored all four of the runs in the sixth inning.
Through the first five innings of play, the two teams combined to strand six runners on the base paths. Minnesota left four on, two of which were in scoring position, while UNLV had two standing on first base when the inning ended.
The Golden Gophers broke the defensive stalemate with a four-hit frame in the sixth. Their first two batters - Erica Meyer and Kari Dorle - began the offensive with a single and a walk, respectively, off Stefany Valentino (0-1), who entered the circle in relief in the third. Following a sacrifice bunt by Kaitlyn Richardson, Francesca Foti was summoned from the bullpen. Unfortunately, Foti's first pitch was wild and it allowed Meyer to score from third. Bree Blanchette extended the lead to two runs with an RBI single to score Richardson. After the Rebels recorded an out, the visitors had runners on the corners and got back-to-back run-scoring hits from Paige Palkovich (triple) and Erica Smyth (single) to cap off the scoring.
The Rebels were unable to muster any offense to counter Minnesota's attack during the final two at-bats. They left one more base runner on in the seventh after Katie Uriarte had reached on a two-out single.
Moulton improved to 1-3 on the year in the complete-game shutout. She struck out seven against one walk.
Amanda Oliveto got the start for UNLV and tossed two scoreless innings and recoded three K's to one hit allowed. Valentino was saddled with the loss after giving up two runs off of two hits. Foti threw 1.2 innings of relief and was touched for two runs off of three hits.
The Rebels stay at home for the second consecutive week to host their Easton Desert Classic - a four-day tournament that is played at both UNLV's Eller Media Stadium and in nearby Henderson at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park. UNLV will play all six of its contests at EMS with the first scheduled for Feb. 14, at 6:45 pm against San Jose State. In all, the Rebels will play six games this upcoming weekend.
