Gophers Sent Burrowing After Rebel Win
Feb. 11, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (1-2) notched their first win of the 2012 season, a 2-1 decision, against the Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-1) Saturday night in the Sportco Kick-Off Classic held at Eller Media Stadium. UNLV's come-from-behind victory was made possible by a complete-game outing from Amanda Oliveto (1-1) and a two-run home run by Tayler Van Acker in the sixth inning.
Minnesota's Sara Moulton, who had thrown a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over Kent State earlier in the day, held the Rebel bats in check for most of the game. Moulton was only touched for three hits, two of which were off Paige Emerson's bat and the rocket launched over the outer fence of the stadium by Van Acker.
Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Emerson jump started the Rebel offense with a single up the middle following the first out of the inning. A ground ball by Stefany Valentino pushed Emerson into scoring position before Van Acker's dinger off a 3-2 count.
Oliveto made the score hold up in the seventh with a quick 1-2-3 frame. The only run she surrendered was off a defensive miscue that allowed the Golden Gophers to station runners at first and second with no outs. Both runners moved up a base following a groundout, and the one on third scored when Sara Dupaul poked a pitch into shallow right for an RBI single.
Fortunately, for Oliveto and the Rebels, she was able to work out of the jam and forced Minnesota to leave the bases loaded to end the frame.
In all, Oliveto pitched 7.0 innings and allowed one run (unearned) on five hits. She struck out six against one walk.
Moulton threw 6.0 innings and gave up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
UNLV returns to action Sunday afternoon at 3:45 pm in the finale of the Sportco Kick-Off Classic against the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners. The day begins at 9:00 am when #5/6 Oklahoma battles Kent State.
