Bulldogs Sweep Matadors

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team earned a pair of wins over CSU Northridge on Wednesday at Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs defeated the Matadors 3-2 in the first game and then 8-2 in the night cap. The Bulldogs improve to 6-1 on the young season."We are taking it game-by-game and we got two more w's," said head coach Trisha Ford. "We did a good job of taking care of business and now we are shifting focus to this weekend."

Ford called up her young pitchers on Wednesday and once again they delivered in the circle. Freshmen Jill Compton and Hannah Harris combined for 11 scoreless innings against the Matadors. Compton earned her fourth win of the year and after allowing two runs in the first inning of game one, she threw six scoreless innings. Harris recorded her first win of the season and held CSUN to one hit in the second game.

"Jill has done well for us. We have a good staff, so we will use a good mixture of all of them," Ford said of the pitching staff. "Hannah came in and did really well and showed what she is capable of doing." Harris had a no-hitter going through the first three innings. She finished the night four strikeouts and through her first career complete game.

In the first game, the Matadors scored first taking a 2-0 lead that lasted only half an inning. The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the first with three runs to take the lead.

Ortiz set the `Dogs offense in motion with a single through the right side. Stesha Brazil drove in the first Bulldog run with a double to left field. Michelle Solomon, who finished the night with X hits, followed Brazil's double with a RBI triple to tie the game. Fresno State's defense turned a double play of the season to end the top of the fourth and sixth inning. The Bulldogs' infield has turned five double plays in 2013. The Bulldogs ended the first game with five hits in the win.

"I think we came out with a bit more intensity in the second game," said Ford. "We came out a little bit flat in the first game, but the good thing is that they bounced back in the bottom half of the first inning, which is the sign of a good team." In the second game of the doubleheader, the `Dogs offense came alive. Fresno State opened with two runs in second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Moss drove in the second run of the game with a her second hit of the night.
