Feb. 16, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (3-2) notched a 1-0 win over the Memphis Tigers (2-3) by a final score of 1-0 Thursday night in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels scored their only run off a four-base error put in play by Tayler Aleman, while Amanda Oliveto (2-1) held the Tiger bats hitless.
The no-no was the third for Oliveto in just two years at UNLV and solely into second place in UNLV's career records.
After leaving a trio of runners on the bases through three innings of action, Aleman led off the fourth and hit a deep fly to right field. Memphis' Iijah Hargrove camped under the ball, but had it carom off her glove and roll into foul territory. Aleman motored around the bases for the game's only score.
Oliveto carried a perfect game into the fifth inning and got the first two batters to ground out before she walked her counterpart Emma Roberts (1-1) on five pitches. She began the game retiring the first 14 batters she faced. For the game, she got 12 batters to ground out, five to strike out and two to line out.
Roberts threw six innings and struck out six, but allowed the four hits.
UNLV returns to action Friday with a pair of games against DePaul and Idaho State at 3:45 pm and 6:00 pm, respectively. The four-day tournament will be contested at two sites, UNLV's Eller Media Stadium and Stephanie Lynn Craig Park, in nearby Henderson. There are 16 games on the docket for Friday with four being played at UNLV and the other 12 at SLC.
