SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ( - The UNLV Rebels (6-5) picked up two wins Friday at UC Santa Barbara's Gaucho Classic I held at Campus Diamond alongside the Pacific Ocean. UNLV's first victory was a 2-1, nine-inning decision over the San Diego Toreros (3-4), while the second was a quick 1-0 shutout of the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack (3-8). UNLV's effort was greatly influenced by its pitching staff and the hot bat of Paige Emerson.

Amanda Oliveto (4-3) threw a total of 9.1-scoreless innings and struck out 10 on the day en route to picking up the wins in both games. Oliveto entered the USD affair in the seventh and held the Torero batters in check. She kept dealing with the hot hand against the Wolf Pack, who only registered three hits and struck out eight times.

Emerson amassed a .714 batting average for the day with a 5-for-7 performance at the plate with four singles and one triple. She tied a career-high in hits with four in the UNR affair and scored the game's only run.

Against USD, the Toreros took a 1-0 lead off an RBI single by Caitlin Rooney in the second inning to left. Jessica Tieszen, who led off the frame with a single of her own, scored from second on Rooney's hit.

The Rebels were able to get runners on the bases against USD's Jenny Lahitte (1-2), but were unable to capitalize until the sixth. After leaving five stranded though five, UNLV evened up the score in the sixth. Tayler Aleman led off the stanza with a walk and then stole second base. A fly out by Tayler Van Acker pushed Aleman to third before an RBI single by Christina Montoya brought her home.

The game remained tied at 1-all until the bottom of the ninth. With the international tiebreaker in effect, Korin Cuico was placed at second base prior to Heather Harrison's at-bat. Harrison promptly dropped a sacrifice bunt that moved Cuico to third base. Stefany Valentino then ended the game when she hit a sacrifice fly to center for the game-winner.

Jessica O'Connor started the game and earned a no-decision in 6.2 innings of work. O'Connor was touched for one run on five hits, and she struck out two.

Lahitte threw 8.2 innings and was saddled with the loss. She gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits. She struck out 16 against six walks.

Against UNR, the only run was scored before the third out of the game was recorded. Emerson led off the contest with a single through the left side and took second on an infield single by Aleman. Van Acker then hit a run-scoring single to left that allowed Emerson to score.

Unfortunately, UNLV left nine batters on the bases after Emerson's run. Five of those nine were stranded in scoring position, which included three of those last four runners.

Oliveto opened up the game with 13 consecutive strikes and fanned three of the first four batters she faced. She only allowed four runners to reach base and one to get as far as second base.

Mallory Darby (3-3) went the distance for UNR, but lost the game. Darby allowed one run on nine hits, and she struck out nine and walked two.

UNLV returns to action bright and early Saturday morning with two games. The Rebels open up at 8:15 am against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos before a tussle with the #23 Houston Cougars at 10:30 am.
