Lobos Top Kansas, 2-1, in Final Day of Grand Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Lobos finished their weekend at the 2013 Best Western Marina Grand Islander Classic with a 4-1 mark, earning a 2-1 win over Kansas on Sunday in their final day of play in Corpus Christi, Texas.
New Mexico improves to an even 9-9 while bumping the Jayhawks to 10-4.
Rimmer also recorded her 14th stolen base of the season which matches last year's team high achieved by Jessica Lujan-Dresslar over 52 games.
It was a combined effort in the circle on Sunday morning as senior Kaela DeBroeck got the start and threw the first 4.2 innings, and freshman Lauren Soles tossed the final 2.1 innings and picked up the win to improve to 4-2.
In 18 batters faced, DeBroeck scatted three hits and gave up one earned run while walking one and striking out one. Soles faced nine batters and allowed two hits while walking one and striking out two.
The Lobos head west next to participate in the 2013 San Diego Classic I hosted by San Diego State and San Diego, March 1-3. UNM will play five games over three days, facing Utah State, San Diego, BYU, Long Beach State and UCLA.
Lobos 2, Kansas 1
The Lobos jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as freshman Mariah Rimmer led off with a single through the left side, stole second base and was driven in off a single to left field by junior Chelsea Anaya.
Kansas tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as Rosie Hull drew a walk to and was drive in by a triple to right field by Ashley Newman.
New Mexico reclaimed the lead in the top of the final frame as senior Sheryl Guillermo led off by drawing a walk and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt down the third base line by Jordyn Bledsoe. A double down the left field line by Rimmer brought Guillermo around and put the Lobos ahead, 2-1.
The Jayhawks' Chanin Naudin drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh, but didn't make it past first base as the next three batters grounded out and the contest ended, 2-1, in favor of New Mexico.
