CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The Rams collected seven hits against the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday, but only one runner came around to score as CSU lost, 8-1, at Des Moines Field in Big League Dreams Sports Park.
With the loss, the Rams dropped to a 4-9 record (0-0 Mountain West), while Northwestern picked up its fourth win (4-9, 0-0 Big Ten) overall and first of the tournament.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead with an RBI single, RBI groundout and a three-run home run in the first inning, giving them a quick 5-0 edge. CSU got on the board in the fifth with a two-out RBI double from sophomore Emily Pohl. A throwing error by Northwestern shortstop Emily Allard allowed CSU sophomore Ashlie Ortega to reach and eventually come around to score on the double by Pohl. Pohl went 4-for-4 in the game and knocked in her fifth run of the season.
CSU sophomore Alysa Greckel went 1-for-4 with a single in the fifth. The hit extended her current hitting streak to six games, giving her both the current and longest CSU streaks this season.
Junior Kacie McCarthy made her third start of the season and pitched a complete game, giving up all eight of Northwestern's runs. McCarthy struck out 10 batters, a season high in her six appearances this year.
The Rams will close out the Cathedral City Classic and their third weekend of play Sunday with a game against Ohio State at 10 a.m. MT, followed immediately by a matchup with host Oregon State. The 10-4 Beavers are off to their best start since 2006, when they made the school's only appearance in the Women's College World Series.
