With two outs, Jessica Garcia hit a single to left field and drove in Cox to put New Mexico up 1-0 in the top of the inning.
Cal Poly used two singles to center field and a double down the left field line to put three runs up on the board and claim the 3-1 lead after one inning. The Mustangs added one more run in the bottom of the second inning and led 4-1 going into the top of the sixth.
New Mexico had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't get the necessary production at the plate to drive the runners in.
In the top of the sixth inning, Garcia led off with a single and Cassandra Kalapsa came in to pinch run for the senior catcher. Kalapsa advanced to second on a wild pitch and was then driven in by a double to right center by Jessica Lujan-Dresslar to bring the Lobos one run closer and make it 4-2.
Lujan-Dresslar made it to third base on a wild pitch, but the Mustangs' pitcher Rebecca Patton struck out the next three Lobo batters.
Sheehan didn't allow any hits in the bottom of the sixth, but New Mexico didn't manage any off Patton either in the top of the seventh and the game ended, 4-2 Mustangs.
