SAN DIEGO -- No. 10/12 UCLA used six hits to score 12 runs in the top of the fourth inning en route to a 14-3 run-rule victory over the New Mexico Lobos on Sunday in the final day of the San Diego Classic I hosted by San Diego State and San Diego.
The Lobos drop to 11-12 overall while the Bruins, who won all five of their games at the Classic, improve to 17-2.
Freshman Lauren Soles got the start and threw five complete innings. In 27 batters faced, she allowed nine hits and five earned runs while walking three and striking out two.
The game was tied at one run apiece through two innings of play. The Bruins struck first, using two hits to score one run in the top of the first inning while the Lobos matched the run in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a single down the right field line by Karissa Haleman that scored Courtney Geith. Geith had led off with a bunt single.
The Bruins pulled ahead, 2-1, in the third as Ally Carda hit a solo home run over the right field fence.
UCLA held the Lobos scoreless in the bottom of the third frame and then entered the fourth and went to work.
The Bruins pounded out six hits -- including two doubles and a triple -- and capitalized on a Lobo error as well as some pitching blunders to put up 12 runs in the top of the inning.
Of the 12 runs scored in the inning - six were a result of pitching blunders as three runs were walked in, two scored off a hit-by-pitch and another run scored as a result of a wild pitch.
It was 14-1 heading into the bottom of the inning.
New Mexico put up a run in both the fourth and the fifth. Again it was Haleman driving in Geith in the fourth and in the fifth, a single through the left side by Geith allowed Chelsea Anaya to reach home.
However, the game ended, 14-3, as UCLA had more than an eight-run advantage over the Lobos after five innings of play.
New Mexico travels to Seattle, Wash., next weekend for the 2013 Husky Softball Classic. The Lobos will face Bradley, Seattle, Washington and Yale.
