Rally Bid Comes Up Short For Rebels
March 3, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (7-13) concluded their Eller Media Stadium Classic with a 5-3 loss to the New Mexico State Aggies (14-7) on Sunday evening. The loss was the third straight for UNLV in the Classic after opening up with a pair of wins on Friday evening.
The Rebels came to bat in the seventh trailing by four runs, but made a game of it with help from some shoddy defense by the Aggies. After the first two outs had been recorded, Garie Blando and Stefany Valentino reached base safely following a walk and a single, respectively. Jaexie Balilea then stepped up and hit a shallow fly into center field that was dropped by the NMSU second baseman. Both Blando and Valentino scored on the play, as the former touched the plate easily on the fly ball error while the latter made her way home when the shortstop errantly threw to second and the ball steadily rolled away from the Aggie covering the base. Unfortunately, the next batter grounded into the final out to end the scoring threat.
Both teams scored a run in the opening stanza of the game. NMSU got an RBI single from Kelsey Dodd that scored a runner from second that had initially reached base via a throwing error. The Rebels countered in the bottom half of the frame with help from a run-scoring double by Tayler Aleman. Tayler Van Acker scored from first on the hit to the gap in left-center.
The Aggies took the lead for good with a run in the second. Malena Padilla got the offensive revving with a single to right before moving up 60 feet following a sacrifice bunt. Alyssa Ruiz then hit a single to right-center to score Padilla from second.
The visitors from Las Cruces extended their lead to four runs after scoring one in the fourth and twice more in the fifth. Amber Olive was credited with an RBI single in the fourth while Staci Rodriguez and Padilla had run-scoring hits in the fifth.
Amanda Oliveto (6-6) was saddled with the loss in a complete-game outing. Oliveto was touched for five runs (four earned) off of 10 hits. She struck out three against four walks.
NMSU's Alex Norman improved to 7-4 on the year after going the distance and allowing three runs (one earned) off of five hits and two walks.
After playing three of the first four weekends of the 2013 campaign at home, UNLV hits the road for two straight weekends in the Golden State. First up is a trip to Long Beach to participate in the Long Beach State Invitational. The Scarlet & Gray will face UC Santa Barbara (11:30 am) and North Dakota State (2:00 pm) on the first day of play - Friday, March 8. They will play Friday and Saturday at LBSU's 49er Softball Complex before shifting over to Mayfair Park in nearby in Lakewood, Calif. Besides playing UCSB and NDSU, the Rebels will square off against Virginia Tech, Weber State and UCLA.
