Rebels Have More Fight Than Irish
March 11, 2012
LONG BEACH, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (12-12) needed extra innings to get past the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-8) in a 3-2 contest Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Long Beach State Invitational played at the 49er Softball Complex. All five runs were scored after the fifth inning, three of which crossed the plate in the ninth and final frame.
After neither team was able to score a run in the eighth with the international tiebreaker in effect, the Rebels scored twice off a two-run home run by Paige Emerson for the win. Tara Woodall was placed at second to start the final stanza, and she trotted around to score following Emerson's no-doubter over the right-field fence.
Following the homer, the Rebels loaded up the bases behind a hit-by-pitch and two walks, but were unable to capitalize before the third out was recorded.
UND countered with a run of its own in the ninth off an RBI single from a pinch-hitting Lauren Stuhr.
The game was forced to extra innings when the Fighting Irish, who were down to their final out, got a walk and then an RBI triple down the right-field line in the bottom of the seventh to knot the game up at 1-all. Emilee Koerner laced the game-tying hit that scored Monica Torres from first.
Prior to the walk, Amanda Oliveto (8-7) had held the UND batters in-check and had retired 17 straight following a two-out single in the first. Six of those 17 went down in order via strike-three calls. She had a hand in 12 of the 27 putouts, six by strike out and six by a fielding play.
While UND was having its issues with Oliveto, the UNLV offense was getting batters on base, but not getting them home. Overall, the Rebels left 13 runners stranded with eight in scoring position. They loaded the bases twice to no avail.
UNLV got on the board first after Tayler Aleman led off the sixth with a double down the line in left. Korin Cuico then hit a single to right to move Aleman up 60 feet before Kylie Wagner's RBI single to right.
Emerson had two RBI and scored once besides tying for the team lead in hits with two. Cuico had two hits, as well.
Oliveto picked up the win in nine innings of work. She was touched for two runs (one earned) off of three hits. She struck out six against one walk.
Dating back to Saturday, Oliveto has made three appearances and thrown a total of 19.2 innings. She has allowed three runs (one earned) off of five hits. She owned a 4:1 walk-to-strikeout ratio with 12 Ks to three walks.
Laura Winter dropped to 4-5 on the year after giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits. She fanned 13 batters compared to two walks.
UNLV stays out on the road for its second consecutive trip to California next weekend. The Rebels will play in the San Diego Classic II, which is co-hosted by San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. UNLV will play five games beginning with Friday's (March 16) action against Harvard (11:00 am) followed by Purdue (2:00 pm).
