Rebels Cruise Past The Mavericks
March 15, 2013
SANTEE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (9-16) flew by the UT Arlington Mavericks (13-10) on Friday afternoon by a 2-0 final score at the San Diego Classic held in Santee, Calif. Tayler Van Acker was responsible for UNLV's two runs while teammate Amanda Oliveto tossed a complete-game shutout for her eighth win of the year.
After leaving one runner at second base in the first inning, the Rebels made the most of their opportunity with runners on bases in the third. Garie Blando and Stefany Valentino got things going with back-to-back one-out singles before Jaexie Balilea sacrificed them both into scoring position. Van Acker then stepped up and delivered a seeing-eye single through the left-side to plate both runners with ease of Field 1 at Sportsplex USA.
Van Acker's hit produced the only offense on the day despite the team's combining to leave nine runners stranded. The Rebels left six on base, five of which were in scoring position. UTA, on the other hand, only had three reach bases with two stuck at second and a third on third.
Oliveto (8-8) held the Maverick offense in-check, as she retired the side in five of seven frames. She was touched for two hits, both of which were singles. She struck out six against one seventh-inning walk.
UNLV returns to action at 2:00 pm with a tilt against the Marist Red Foxes on Field 2 at Sportsplex USA.
NOTES: Van Acker moved up into a third-place tie in UNLV's career records with her 20th hit-by-pitch ... She is now tied with Brittany Meade (2005-09) ... Valentino extended her on-base streak to 23 games with her 3-for-3 performance at the plate vs. UTA.
