Foti Upstages Red Foxes Act
March 15, 2013
SANTEE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (10-16) knocked off the Marist Red Foxes (6-4) to complete their sweep of Friday's action at the San Diego Classic II in Santee, Calif. Heather Harrison recorded the lone RBI in the contest while Francesca Foti gave the Rebel pitching staff its second shutout in as many games.
Today's wins marked the first time that UNLV hurlers posted consecutive shut-out victories since they achieved the feat against Weber State (March 5) and Portland State (March 6) - identical 8-0, five-inning affairs - during the 2010 campaign.
The game was scoreless up until Harrison's go-ahead, game-winning RBI single in the fifth. Paulne Monreal led off the frame with a double to left. Monreal took third on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Juarez before Harrison's hit to center.
The teams combined to leave 10 runners on in the game. Marist left six behind with three stranded in scoring position, including two in its opening at-bat. UNLV, on the other hand, left four behind, three of which were at either second or third base.
Foti (1-5) notched her first career win as a Rebel with a three-hit, complete-game outing. She struck out three against four walks.
Marist's Emily Osterhaus threw seven innings, but was saddled with the loss. Osterhaus allowed one run off of five hits with one K and two walks.
The Rebels return to action on Saturaday morning with back-to-back games at Field 1 at Sportsplex USA. UNLV opens up the day against Bryant at 9:00 am, which will be immediately followed with a battle with Buffalo at 11:30 am.
