Softball Wins 20th with 8-5 Victory Over Seattle
March 24, 2012
Boise, ID --- They call them table setters for a reason. Stefanie Carramusa and Shenise Cox combined to go 6-for-8 with four runs scored and four runs batted in as the Lobos won their 20th game of the season, improving to 20-6 with an 8-5 win over Seattle in the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Boise. The Lobos are now 3-0 in the tournament, with games against UT-Pan American and Weber State on Sunday.
The win improved New Mexico to 20-6, topping last year's win total in just 26 games. New Mexico went 19-26 last year in Erica Beach's first year.
The Lobos jumped on Seattle of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference early, as Carramusa blasted her 12th home run of the season on the fifth pitch of the game leading off the bottom of the first. The 12 home runs is one off the single-season UNM record. Cox then singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jessica Garcia singled, and then with two outs Dani Castro doubled both home for a 3-0 advantage.
In the second, Cox doubled in Garcia to make it 4-0. In the fourth, Carramusa doubled in Jordyn Bledsoe, and then Cox singled in Carramusa to make it 6-0. Seattle scratched out a run in the top of the fifth to make it 6-1, but the Lobos answered right back in the bottom half as Jordan Sjostrand hit a two-out, two run homer to make it 8-1.
Kari Gutierrez started and earned the win, improving to 3-1, but she ran out of steam in the sixth. A bases clearing double by Mandie Sugita made it 8-4, and after she was driven in to make it 8-5 with two outs, Carrie Sheehan came into the circle, and shut the rally down, working around a pair of singles. Sheehan than worked out of a jam in the seventh for her first save of the year.
NOTES: The two home runs bring UNM's national leading total to 51 ... Carramusa now leads the team with 23 extra base hits, a .934 slugging percentage, and 1.439 OPS ... the save was UNM's second of the year.
