Rebels Break Mustangs With Sunday's Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (17-14) defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs (7-18) by a 4-1 final score Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Mustang Classic held at Bob Janssen Field. The win was the third straight for UNLV on the weekend and seventh overall in its last nine outings.
The Rebels broke open the scoreless affair with a run in both the fifth and sixth innings. Pauline Monreal led off the fifth with a single before moving into scoring position following a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt. Monreal scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Stefany Valentino.
UNLV extended its lead to two runs in the sixth off a solo shot to left center by Jaexie Balilea. The home run was the sixth of the season for Balilea.
Cal Poly answered UNLV's sixth-inning tally with one of its own. Kim Westlund recorded an RBI single to right to score Nora Sobczak from second. Sobczak got on base with a one-out single.
Korin Cuico and Heather Harrison scored once apiece in the seventh to push the Rebels lead to three runs. Cuico led off with a double to left center before moseying around the bases off of a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Cuico scored on the wild pitch immediately before Harrison went yard with a dinger off the scoreboard in left.
Harrison's homer capped off her perfect day at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort. She had two singles prior to the home run.
Amanda Oliveto (11-8) went the distance for the Rebels and notched her 11th win in the process. Oliveto was touched for one run off of five hits. She struck out four and walked two.
Chloe Wurst dropped to 2-9 on the year after throwing 6.1 innings of the game. Wurst allowed four runs off of seven hits and struck out one.
UNLV returns to action Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader in Cedar City, Utah against Southern Utah. The first game is scheduled for a 2:00 pm first pitch.
