RENO, Nevada – The Colorado State softball team remained perfect in Mountain West action, notching a 10-0 shutout against Nevada Friday afternoon.

The five-inning win was CSU’s seventh shutout of the season. The win also helps keep the Rams in first place in the conference standings, holding a perfect 4-0 record.

Behind strong pitching and lethal offense, the Rams plated three runs in the first inning. After Ashlie Ortega began the inning with a single, Shae Rodriguez walked and Cassy Mosser single to short. With the bases loaded, Emily Pohl brought in the first run after being hit by a pitch. Danielle Wikre and Alysa Greckel followed with sacrifice flies.

"All year we've been trying to get our pitchers more runs support, and we keep talking about trying to do the little things, not being too proud to wear a pitch or draw a walk or hustle out a bloop," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "That was our focus today; we need runners on when the big hits come."

CSU’s momentum continued in the top of the second, tacking on two additional runs. Kendal Butterfield was hit by a pitch, and later scored on an Ortega double. Again, the Rams earned a free run as Wikre walked with the bases loaded.

The Rams added five insurance runs in the third, bringing the score to 10-0. On the day, Ortega went 3-for-3 at the plate. Greckel and Mosser each added two hits, as well.

Senior pitcher Kacie McCarthy was dominant in the circle, boosting her record to 14-7. She earned her sixth complete-game shutout of the season, allowing just one hit. McCarthy struck out four while walking five.

"Kacie did a really nice job,” Fisher said. “She was once again hitting her spots and trying to work ahead. She had to work deep into the count often, but she did a great job making her pitches and giving up some walks at times when they didn't end up hurting her. She managed that situation really well."

Game 2 of the three-game series will take place at 2 p.m. MT on Saturday. Live coverage can be found here.
