FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball opened its three-game series against Boise State with a 5-0 win at Bulldog Diamond on Friday night. The Bulldogs (23-18, 4-3 MW) outhit the Broncos 8-3 in the victory.
"Tonight was a great opportunity to bounce back from our game against CSU Bakersfield," said head coach Trisha Ford. "We had some hard hits, but we also put the ball in play and used the dirt. When we use the dirt and our speed good things happen."
Freshman Jill Compton hurled her third complete game shut of the season in her 23rd start. She struck out four and allowed only three hits in her 10th win in the circle. Compton is now 10-11 on the season and after throwing a shutout has an ERA of 3.46.
"She did really well tonight," catcher Paige Gumz said of Compton's performance. "She was on her mental game tonight and that backed up her performance. Having a good mindset is a huge factor in being successful and she had a strong mindset tonight."
Back-to-back doubles from Vonnie Martin and Gumz drove in the first run for the Bulldogs in the second inning. Brenna Moss extended the `Dogs lead with a RBI single to center field. Fresno State headed to the third inning with a 2-0 lead over Boise State.
"We really focused on putting the ball in play," said Gumz. "We were hitting it hard to the ground. We aren't always going to get a home run hit, so putting it in play and putting pressure on them makes it easier for us to be successful."
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the third inning after capitalizing on three hits and two errors to score three runs. Martin, who was 2-for-3 on the night, recorded the third Bulldog RBI in the third inning. The `Dogs took a 5-0 advantage into the fourth inning.
"That's Bulldog softball. That is our brand," Ford said of capitalizing on errors in the third inning. "We are here to put pressure on defenses. We've got good team speed, we have some players that can create some havoc and it's a matter of putting ourselves in that position."
Compton closed out the game by retiring the final four batters in order. Moss and Martin recorded a multi-hit game and a total of six Bulldogs recorded a hit against the Broncos.
The series against Boise State continues on Saturday, April 13 at 6 p.m. in Bulldog Diamond.
