Lobos Even Series With Win On Saturday
April 13, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (17-23, 3-5 MW) were shut out by the New Mexico Lobos (19-25, 3-5 MW), 10-0, in five innings on Saturday afternoon in Mountain West softball action at Eller Media Stadium. UNM outhit UNLV 11-5 and scored multiple times in three of the game's five innings.
UNLV began the game getting two runners into scoring position in its opening at-bat. Unfortunately, both runners - Stefany Valentino and Tayler Van Acker - were left on the bases when the final out was recorded.
UNM got on the board in the second with help from three hits and a hit-by-pitch. The Lobos got their first two runners on off a single and a HBP before they moved to second and third after a sacrifice bunt. Mia Hignojos and Jordyn Bledsoe then connected on back-to-back singles up the middle to plate the two runners.
In the third, the Lobos got runners into scoring position off two singles. A wild pitch uncorked by Francesca Foti (2-9) allowed the first to score prior to Hignojos hitting a sacrifice fly to plate the other one.
The Rebels appeared to have scored a run in the bottom half of the third when Valentino touched home off a fly out by Van Acker. Unfortunately, UNM's coaching staff appealed the call to the third-base umpire who deemed that Valentino had left the bag too early.
The Lobos scored six times in the fourth with four hits - three of which were of the extra-base variety. Both Courtney Geeth and Mariah scattered RBI doubles to start the offensive before Kari Gutierrez hit a bases-clearing grand slam after Foti had loaded them up with consecutive walks.
Kaela DeBroeck (6-6) tossed a five-hitter and picked up the win in five innings of work for the visitors from Albuquerque.
Foti was tagged with the loss for UNLV in five frames of action. She allowed 10 runs off of 11 hits and five walks.
UNLV and UNM resume their three-game series on Saturday with a 1:00 pm contest at Eller Media Stadium.
