SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore Brenna Moss hit her first career home run to spark a seventh inning comeback against San Diego State. The Bulldogs (26-21, 7-6 MW) late rally was halted and the Aztecs won 5-3 in the first game of the series on Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium.
"It was awesome how much heart we showed and battled back late in the game," said Moss. "It's unfortunate that we lost, but it's good that we didn't give up and continued to fight until the end."
Moss' home run brought the `Dogs within two of the Aztecs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
"It was awesome," Moss said of her home run. "She had been throwing me first pitch inside the entire game. I was ready for it."
Senior Diane Runge kept the final inning a live reaching base on an error. Third baseman Vonnie Martin followed with a single through the right side as the tying run got on base with two outs. The Aztecs managed to get out of another jam to win the first of three meetings this weekend.
The Bulldogs collected nine hits against the Aztec ace Rebecca Arbino, while SDSU recorded five hits. Jill Compton made the start for the Bulldogs and struck out four in her 27th start of the year.
The Aztecs' Patrice Jackson recorded all five RBI of the night. Her first two came in the first inning with a two-run home run to left field giving SDSU a 2-0 advantage.
Fresno State threatened in the third inning putting two runners on with a two out rally. Runge and Martin hit back-to-back singles, but were stranded as the Aztecs got out of the jam with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the third, the Aztecs added to their lead with another RBI from Jackson and the Bulldogs trailed 3-0 heading into the fourth inning. Jackson hit her second two-run long ball in the fifth inning to increase the Aztecs lead to 5-0.
Michelle Solomon put the `Dogs on the board after hitting a two-run jack to left field in the sixth inning as the `Dogs trailed 5-2. Solomon has four home runs on the season, which is second most on the team.
In the seventh, Moss hit her first long ball, but the Aztecs halted the Bulldogs rally clinching the win 5-3.
"It's really important for us to win this series because it gives an opportunity at the postseason," Moss said. "It's disappointing that we lost tonight, but we will come back tomorrow."
Fresno State faces San Diego State again on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
