ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico Lobos softball team claimed its second Mountain West conference victory, 13-7, on Saturday over UNLV at Lobo Softball Field. The contest was a slugfest as the Lobos (27-21, 2-6) pounded out 20 hits while the Rebels (20-25, 1-7) recorded 11.

The two teams wrap up the weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m. New Mexico will honor its five seniors following Sunday's game.

Kari Gutierrez got the start and the win, throwing 5.1 innings. The junior allowed ten hits, six earned runs, while walking three and striking out two. Carrie Sheehan came in to relieve Gutierrez in the sixth inning and recorded her second save of the season. The rookie faced six batters, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one.

New Mexico got at least one hit from each Lobo in its lineup. Five Lobos had two hits or better and Shenise Cox, Jessica Garcia and Jessica Lujan-Dresslar had three hits apiece. Cox and Garcia each recorded a home run as Garcia extends her hitting streak to 10 games. Lujan-Dresslar also has a hot bat as this was the sixth-consecutive game in which she has recorded at least one hit.

UNM recorded eight hits in the first inning as the Lobos batted through their line up and through UNLV's starting pitcher to claim a 6-0 lead. The Rebels also committed two throwing errors in the first frame.

Lobos 13, UNLV 7

New Mexico got two more hits in the second inning -- a single to right field from Garcia and a bunt from Lujan-Dresslar, but the Lobos left both runners on base.

UNLV used three hits to put three runs up on the scoreboard in top of the fourth, but the Lobos answered, using four hits and another Rebel throwing error to tack on two runs in the bottom of the inning. Cox led off with a single through the left side, stole second and was advanced to third on a single by Chelsea Anaya. A single to right field by Lujan-Dresslar loaded the bases and when Sheryl Guillermo hit a deep grounder, the throw to home was late allowing Cox to reach safely. An errant throw by UNLV's catcher who was trying to throw out Anaya at third allowed the Lobos' short stop to reach home and increase UNM's lead, 8-3 after four frames.

New Mexico added two more in the bottom of the fifth inning off a homer to left field by Cox. Carramusa had reached on a double to right center and then Cox hit her 14th long ball of the season to bump the score to 10-3.

The Rebels managed a small rally in the top of the sixth which prompted a Lobo pitching change -- Carrie Sheehan in for Gutierrez. UNLV managed four runs off five hits and a Lobo miscue to move within three runs of UNM, 10-7.

Garcia led off the sixth with a homer to center field -- her 21st. Lujan-Dresslar followed with a double to left center and then Castro singled to right field and both runners advanced on a throwing error by the Rebels' right fielder. A batter and an out later, Lujan-Dresslar reached home and Castro made it to third off a wild pitch. The three runs off three hits and an error made it 13-7 in favor of the Cherry and Silver.

UNLV didn't manage a hit in the top of the seventh and the slugfest ended in a Lobo victory, 13-7.
