Miscues Hamper Rebels In Loss
May 10, 2013
SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (21-30, 7-10 MW) were hampered by five defensive miscues in their 7-0 setback to the San Diego State Aztecs (33-18, 11-5 MW) on Friday evening at the SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego. The Aztecs scored all the runs they needed in the first inning, while their hurler Danielle O'Toole tossed six innings of four-hit ball en route to her 14th win of the season.
UNLV managed to get a pair of runners on the bases on three different occasions - first, third and fourth innings, but O'Toole wound up getting out of each frame unscathed. She did not allow a runner to reach third base safely, while she struck out four, walked one and hit a batter.
SDSU got the scoring started with two runs off of three hits and the assistance from a fielding error. After getting two on via a single and a walk, Lorena Bauer connected on a single through the right side to plate the game's first run. Following the errant play, Kamerin May hit an RBI single to center field to score one more.
The Aztecs got runners on in the third and fourth to no avail after Francesca Foti (2-11) worked out of the would-be scoring situations.
Unfortunately, the Rebels weren't as lucky in the sixth inning. SDSU scored five runs that were aided by two errors and four hits. The first run crossed on a throwing error, while the subsequent runs were the result of an RBI single by Patrice Jackson and a three-run home run by Bauer, who ended the day 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.
Foti was tagged with the loss after throwing six innings. She was touched for nine hits and allowed seven runs, but only one was earned.
The Rebels and Aztecs close out the 2013 regular season on Sunday afternoon with their 1:00 pm contest at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
