It All Begins In Seven Days

Feb. 1, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After weeks of practice and preparation, the UNLV softball program will open its 2013 season next week in its own Sportco Kick-Off Classic. The three-day tournament, which runs from Friday, Feb. 8 through Sunday, Feb. 10, will feature four squads - DePaul, Louisville, Texas Tech and UCF - that participated in regional play at the 2012 NCAA Tournament. In all, six teams - UNLV and Minnesota included - will play a total of 14 games at Eller Media Stadium, which is located on the corner of Swenson and Harmon.

Several changes to the 2013 schedule have been made since it was originally released in October. Mainly two of the Rebels home tournaments have undergone some cosmetic alterations. The Sportco Kick-Off Classic has been reworked; however, UNLV's game times have stayed the same. The Rebel Classic (March 22-24), on the other hand, has seen UNLV move one of its games up a day. The Scarlet & Gray will now play twice on Friday, March 22 and only once on Saturday, March 23.

Two other minor changes to this year's docket are strictly time related. UNLV's final contest at the San Diego Classic II (March 15-17) on Sunday, March 17 has been moved up to 9:00 am (vs. Massachusetts). Also, the final home game of the season on Sunday, May 5 vs. Boise State has been kicked up to noon.

This year's edition - the 32nd for the program - will be led by first-year head coach Lisa Dodd, a former NFCA All-American at UCLA and most recently an assistant coach at Oregon. Caitlin Lever and Jessica Serio were brought to Las Vegas by Dodd to be assistant coaches.

The Rebels return seven starters and 13 letterwinners from the 2012 team, including former Mountain West All-Conference Team members Tayler Aleman, Stefany Valentino and Tayler Van Acker.
